Observers Needed

St David’s Day 2026 for The Observer newspaper

Created for St David’s Day for The Observer. Observers Needed is a detailed, Where’s Wally–style illustration designed to reward careful looking.

Set within a lively Welsh rural landscape, the scene captures traditional culture through market stalls, textiles, local produce, and community gatherings. At its centre, a bold red storytelling tent celebrates Wales’ rich storytelling heritage.

Alongside these authentic details, I’ve added playful and fictional elements — hidden characters, visual jokes, and small narrative moments that invite the viewer to explore.

Designed to Be Discovered

This is a seek-and-find illustration with no single focal point. Instead, the eye is encouraged to wander, uncovering layers of Welsh folklore, culture, and storytelling with each viewing.

A Celebration of Welsh Culture

Through colour, detail, and composition, the piece reflects the warmth and vibrancy of St David’s Day, combining folk art illustration with narrative-driven design.
